Higher Ground
Higher Ground is a 5-day intensive orientation program designed to break down barriers and help dissipate the anxiety of students entering college for the first time. Throughout the program, teams of students will spend their time doing various activities such as camping, team-building exercises, rock climbing, paddling, tubing, and caving.
August 18-22, 2025
*Registration required no later than August 1, 2025*
To enroll, you will need to choose one of the following emphases:
- Paddling*
- Rock Climbing*
- Appalachian Experience*
- Caving*
During the week, teams will be participating in their emphasis for 2 of the 5 days, followed by days of additional outdoor activities, such as hiking, team building, and the challenge course.
Details about an equipment/packing list, arrival, and move-in will be provided closer to the start day. Students will be camping in tents for the duration of the orientation.
Higher Ground is a drug, alcohol, weapons, and tobacco-free/e-cigs/vape-free environment. We also do not allow cell phones or personal MP3 devices. Generally, you should not bring anything not included on the Equipment / Packing List. Students violating these rules may be removed from the program with no refund, and be subject to University sanctions.

Higher Ground- Paddling Emphasis
